This is a conditionally-transformed mouse pancreatic islet beta-cell line (Milo-Landesman et al, 2002). The cells express SV40 T antigen under control of the tetracycline operon regulatory system. In the presence of tetracycline, expression of T antigen is shut off and the cells undergo complete growth arrest. Growth-arrested cells can proliferate in response to growth factors in the absence of T antigen. The cells have been employed for beta-cell-specific proliferation bioassays, testing growth factors and cytokines for their mitogenic activity.
