[barrel neuron]
barrel neurons or barrel cells are found in layer IV of the rodent somatosensory neocortex where up to 2000 cortical neurons form an interconnected network of cells that are organized in cytoarchitectural column structures called barrels (Woolsey and Van der Loos, 1970; Pasternak and Woolsey, 1975). The barrel region of the somatosensory cortex contains representations of the whiskers, which map in a topographic manner onto corresponding barrels. Each barrel receives its sensory input from a single sinus hair on the contralateral face (Woolsey, 1967; Van der Loos and Woolsey, 1973). Individual barrel neurons receive little or no direct inputs from neighboring barrels, and most inputs to barrel neurons originate from neurons
