This antibacterial peptide (SNGYRPAYRPAYRPSYRPGK) has been purified from hemocytes of red swamp crayfish Procambarus clarkii. The cDNA encodes a peptide of 43 amino acids with a signal peptide of 23 amino acids (Shi et al, 2014). The mature peptide shares high identity with astacidin-2 from freshwater crayfish Pacifastacus leniusculus. The expression of astacidin is upregulated in hemocytes and gills after bacterial infection. The synthetic peptide inhibits the growth of some Gram-positive bacteria and Gram-negative bacteria. It binds to bacterial cell wall components, including peptidoglycan, lipopolysaccharide
