abbr. ABS. This Drosophila melanogaster protein (gene: CG14637) encodes a putative ATP-dependent RNA helicase of the DEAD box protein family and is considered the fly ortholog of DDX41. Schmucker et al (1997, 2000) have reported that abstrakt is required for pathfinding of the larval optic nerve neurons, and also affects development in both the adult visual system and the embryonic CNS.
abstrakt has been shown to be essential for survival at all stages throughout the life cycle of Drosophila melanogaster. Mutants show specific defects in many developmental processes, including cell-shape changes, localisation of RNA and apoptosis (Irion and Leptin, 1999).
