Zucker rats
also: ZDF rats (diabetic fatty). These rats carry the fatty mutation (fa/fa) (Zucker and Zucker, 1961) and are deficient in leptin receptors (Chua et al, 1996). These animals become obese by the age of 3-5 weeks. At the age of 14 weeks more than 40 % of their body is composed of lipids (Zucker, 1972). The Zucker rat strain is used widely as an experimental model of metabolic syndrome, obesity, and pre-diabetes.
The serum of these rats contains a factor, which acts as an insulin secretagogue and which has been identified as ACTH[22-39] (Beta-cell trophin) (Bedloff-Chain et al, 1983).
