Xhl

[Xenopus laevis homolog of HGF-like protein] Xhl (717 amino acids) is the frog counterpart of HGF-like protein. The protein is involved in the formation of the embryonic nervous system of Xenopus laevis. The mRNA is expressed exclusively in the midline of the prospective neural plate during the period of neural induction. A 'spina bifida'-like phenotype with enlargement of neural tissue is observed upon ectopic expression of Xhl (Aberger et al, 1996).
