(approved gene symbol) [WW domain-containing oxidoreductase] The protein is known also as WOX1 [WW domain-containing oxidoreductase 1]. It is known also as FOR [FRA16D oxidoreductase; Fragile site FRA16D oxidoreductase] (Ried et al, 2000) as the gene is located in a common fragile site, FRA16D, on chromosome 16q23.3-24.1.12 (Bednarek et al, 2000).
The WWOX gene is subject to frequent deletions, loss of heterozygosity, and translocations in numerous types of cancers (Chang et al, 2007), and low or absent expression of WWOX is associated with poor prognosis (Jenner et al, 2007; Ramos et al, 2008).
