WIF-1
[Wnt-inhibitory factor-1] Human WIF-1 isolated from human retina is a secreted protein of 379 amino acids. Concerved orthologous proteins have been found in fish, amphibia and mammals. The Drosophila melanogaster counterpart has been described as shifted (gene symbol shf) and is being referred to also as WIF-1-like protein.
The WIF-1 protein binds to Wnt family members and inhibits their activities. WIF-1 can form specific, high-affinity complexes with frog Wnt-8 and Drosophila melanogaster wingless (Hshieh et al, 1999).
