[WAP 4-disulfide core domain 2] WFDC2 is known also as HE4 [human epididymis 4], identified originally as a transcript exclusively expressed in the epididymis (Kirchhoff et al, 1991). The protein contains a WAP domain, which is known to occur in antiproteinases and proteins involved in the innate immune defence of multiple epithelia.
The function of WFDC2 still remains to be clarified. A role in carcinogenesis and/or tumor progression is suggested by its overexpression in ovarian tumors and subgroups of lung adenocarcinomas (Garber et al, 2001; Hellstrom et al, 2003; Drapkin et al, 2005; Bingle et al, 2006). Serum WFDC2 levels have been suggested to be a sensitive marker for ovarian cancer (Hellstrom et al, 2003).
