Vastatin (Colman et al, 2000) is a bioactive fragment (see also: cryptides) derived from the NC1 domain (non-triple-helical domain) of collagen-8-alpha-1 (collagen-8-alpha-1 NC1 domain; abbr. also: alpha1(VIII)NC1). Vastatin corresponds to collagen-8-alpha(580-744) (residues 580-744 of collagen-8 alpha chain). Recombinant vastatin has been shown to inhibit the proliferation of bovine aortic endothelial cells stimulated by bFGF and thus is expected to affect angiogenesis. Treatment of these cells with vastatin causes cell cycle arrest and cell death by apoptosis (Xu et al, 2001).
