[vascular permeability factor] This factor is called also tumor vascular permeability factor. It is a protein of 189 amino acids that is specifically produced by tumor cells (see also: U937). It is identical with one of the splice variants of the human VEGF [vascular endothelial growth factor]. The factor is, therefore, also being referred to as VPF/VEGF.
A protein related to VPF is PlGF (placenta growth factor).
The intradermal injection of VPF leads to an increased leakage of fluids at the site of injection and to the leakage of proteins from the capillaries. VPF also increases glucose transport and regulates the expression of tissue thromboplastin
