Tian et al (2004) have identified the angiogenic factor, VG5Q, and mutations thereof in patients with a vascular disease characterized by large cutaneous hemangiomas and associated hypertrophy of the related bones and soft tissues (Klippel-Trenaunay syndrome). The gene symbol is AGGF1 [angiogenic factor with G patch and FHA domains-1].
VG5Q protein acts as a potent angiogenic factor in promoting angiogenesis. Suppression of VG5Q expression inhibits vessel formation. VG5Q is expressed strongly in human microvascular endothelial cells and is secreted as vessel formation is initiated. VG5Q may be an autocrine growth factor for endothelial cells. VG5Q is detected also in human umbilical vein endothelial cells
