[VEGF-A189] [Vascular endothelial growth factor-189] a splice variant of human VEGF (vascular endothelial growth factor). For an anti-angiogenic isoform of VEGF-189 see: VEGF-189b.
Park et al (1993) have reported localization of VEGF-189 to the extracellular matrix. VEGF-189 associated with the matrix is bioactive, because endothelial cells cultured on matrix derived from cells expressing VEGF-189 are stimulated markedly to proliferate. Matrix-bound VEGF-189 can be released into a soluble and bioactive form by heparin or plasmin (see also: ectodomain shedding).
