[Ventral anterior homeobox 1] VAX1 is a homeodomain transcription factor expressed in various ventral-medial forebrain-derived structures (Hallonet et al, 1998; Bertuzzi et al, 1999). In humans and knock-out mice, the lack of VAX1 causes agenesis of the anterior commissure, the corpus callosum, and the optic chiasm, in addition to the coloboma of the eye (Bertuzzi et al, 1999; Hallonet et al, 1999; Slavotinek et al, 2012).
Bertuzzi et al (1999) have reported that most knock-out mice lacking expression of VAX1 die at birth. Only a few animals survive for up to 2 weeks. Optic nerve glial cells fail to associate with and appeared to repulse ingrowing retinal axons, which are completely segregated from optic nerve
