abbr. URO; also: URG. This factor of 53 amino acids was isolated initially from human urine. It is found predominantly in the duodenum and in the salivary glands (Gregory et al, 1975).
Gamma-Urogastrone (52 amino acids) lacks the carboxyterminal arginine of Beta-Urogastrone (Smith et al, 1982). Urogastrone is a potent inhibitor of gastric acid secretion and also promotes epithelial cell proliferation.
Urogastrone and EGF have similar biological activities and a high degree of homology of amino acid sequence (70 %). Urogastrone is considered to be human EGF and the factor is being referred to also as EGF-URO.
