The open reading frame US5 in the unique short region of the genome of HSV-1 encodes a glycoprotein (glycoprotein J; abbr. gJ) (Ghiasi et al, 1998). The protein is not essential for virus replication in Vero (African Green monkey kidney) cells, (Weber et al, 1987), BHK cells (Balan et al, 1994), or virus multiplication in vivo in mice (Balan et al, 1994).
HSV-1 isolates inhibit cell death by apoptosis induced by UV or antibodies directed against FAS antigen. Jerome et al (1999) have reported that deletion of the HSV-1 US5 gene markedly reduces protection from FAS mediated cell death by apoptosis
