UL142

[Cytomegalovirus UL142 protein]; abbr. CMV UL142 protein, HCMV UL142 protein. This glycoprotein is encoded in the genome of human cytomegalovirus. The UL142 open reading frame is encoded within the ULb' region which is missing from a number of common high passage laboratory strains. UL142 is a viral MHC class I-related molecule that is expressed late in infection. Knock-down of UL142 mRNA expression in HCMV-infected cells increases the sensitivity of cells to lysis by NK-cells, showing that the protein is involved in immune evasion as an ummunoevasin (Wills et al, 2005).
