This term has multiple meanings:

I unterred this extra unnecessary acronym accidentally from the soils of electronic databanks by searching for UGF instead of UDGF (that I was after). Long live our remarkable ability to create such fine acronyms and three cheers to the authors for wasting an entire line in the abstract to tell us about the creation of this acronym.

But maybe UGF is just a sign of frustration, and one has to show compassion with the poor scientists. This seems plausible if one considers the long form of ... ... ... ...
