This antimicrobial peptide, FFGRLKSVWSAVKHGWKAAKSR, has been identified in Trichoplax adhaerens, the best-known member of the phylum Placozoa, one of the earliest-diverging metazoan phyla (Simunić et al, 2014). Trichoplaxin is active against both Gram-negative bacteria and Gram-positive bacterial species (including MRSA), as well as yeasts from the Candida genus. The cytotoxic activity for rat erythrocytes, U937 cells and MCF7 cells is significantly lower than the antimicrobial activity. Trichoplaxin shows high affinity for anionic prokaryote-like membranes and low affinity for neutral eukaryote-like membranes.
