Thimet is an acronym derived from 'thiol- and metallo-dependent peptidase'. This enzyme is a metalloendopeptidase isolated originally from bovine pituitary (Horsthemke and Bauer, 1980) and rat brain (Orlowski et al, 1983). In the enzyme catalogue the enzyme has been given the designation EC3.4.24.15. The enzyme is being referred to frequently as Endopeptidase 24.15 (abbr. EP24.15) or MP24.15 [metalloendopeptidase 24.15]. TOP [thiol-activated metallo-oligopeptidase] is used as an abbreviation for Thimet oligopeptidase (note that there are other thiol-activated enzymes). The enzyme has been identified independently as BIE [
