[thiol-specific antioxidant protein] This protein has been identified originally in Saccharomyces cerevisiae as a protein that protects against a thiol-containing oxidation system but not against an oxidation system without thiol. The gene encoding this protein has been cloned by Chae et al (1993). The corresponding gene has been cloned also from rat brain (Chae et al, 1994). Sequence analysis shows that the protein is identical with peroxiredoxin-2, which constitutes one subunit (NKEF-B) of the dimeric protein NKEF [Natural killer enhancing factor].
