[Natural killer enhancing factor] This factor is isolated from cytosolic extracts of human red blood cells. NKEF was identified originally by its ability to augment natural killer cytotoxicity in vitro against tumor cells (Shau et al, 1993, 1994, 1997).
NKEF is a dimeric protein consisting of two 24 kDa subunits, NKEF-A (199 amino acids) and NKEF-B (198 amino acids), which are 75 % identical. These proteins belong to a highly conserved antioxidant gene family protein family capable of protecting against protein oxidation in cell-free assay systems.
