This is a commercially available carbocyanine monomer nucleic acid stain with far-red fluorescence bright nuclear staining that does not interfere with additional, green and red, fluorescent stainings. The dye is excited by visible light and can be used in flow cytomentry or with confocal microscopy (Tavecchio M et al, 2008) and has been used for nuclear counterstaining in fluorescence in situ hybridisation (Bink et al, 2001). Henneberger et al (2001) have used the dye for detection of microbial cells in soil samples without interference from background fluorescence.
