This protein has been identified by Hildebrandt et al (2000), who compared metastasizing and non-metastasizing human melanoma cell lines and found the expression of this gene to be downregulated in the metastasizing cell line. The protein is expressed in a wide variety of tissues with the exception of peripheral blood leukocytes.
THW is a protein of 193 amino acids with four putative transmembrane domains. Downregulation of THW expression correlates with the metastatic capacity of melanoma cell lines. Downregulation of expression is observed in other cancer cells compared with non-malignant cells, suggesting that the protein acts as a tumor suppressor.
