This neuropeptide has been isolated from the pituitary neurointermediate lobe of the dryness-resistant African toad Bufo regularis (Chauvet et al, 1995). The peptide is related to Mesotocin and fish isotocin and corresponds to Ser5,Ile8-oxytocin and has the sequence CYIQSCPIG [Cys-Tyr-Ile-Gln-Ser-Cys-Pro-Ile-Gly]. The peptide is virtually devoid of oxytocin activity on rat uterus in contrast to mesotocin.
