abbr. scw (gene: CG31695). This Drosophila melanogaster gene has been identified by Arora et al (1994) as a member of the TGF-beta family. Screw is a Cystine knot cytokine that is part of the signal specifying dorsal cell fates in the embryo by acting together with dpp . Null mutations in the screw gene are phenotypically similar to moderate dpp [Decapentaplegic] mutants and cause dorsal cells to adopt ventral fates. Screw is expressed uniformly during blastoderm stages, its effect on development appears graded and is restricted to the dorsal side of the embryo.
