[specific macrophage arming factor] This biochemically uncharacterized factor of 65-85 kDa is produced by T-lymphocytes in the presence of tumor cells. Its synthesis does not depend on the presence of antigen-presenting macrophages. The factor activates peritoneal macrophages and enables them to kill tumor cells. This activity differs in several respects from the generation of unspecific cytotoxic macrophages induced by MAF (macrophage activating factor). SMAF is related closely to and may be identical with MTCF (mast cell arming T-cell factor) that influences hypersensitivity reactions dependent on mast cells.
