This peptide, termed SR-7 peptide by the authors, has been isolated together with other peptides after simulated gastrointestinal digestion of preserved egg white. In a mouse model of dextran sodium sulfate-induced colitis the peptide significantly ameliorates the clinical symptoms such as weight loss, disease activity index, colon shortening, spleen hypertrophy and histological scores. Treatment with the peptide also significantly inhibits local secretion of pro-inflammatory cytokines TNF-alpha and IL6 and markedly decreases expression of pro-inflammatory cytokines, including TNF-alpha, IL6, IL17,
