[SIGLEC family]
[sialic acid binding immunoglobulin-like lectin] SIGLECs constitute a family of cell surface lectins that act as receptors for glycoprotein and glycolipid ligands containing sialic acid. Several studies describing the sialoside specificities of individual SIGLECs have been reported (Blixt et al, 2003; Rapoport et al, 2006).
These proteins are type 1 transmembrane proteins with at least one extracellular immunoglobulin-like domains (Varki and Angata, 2006).
An evolutionarily conserved subgroup of SIGLECs comprises SIGLEC-1, SIGLEC-2, and SIGLEC-4. A subgroup of SIGLECs are known as CD33-like SIGLECs bears high homology with the CD antigen CD33 (SIGLEC-3
