These cells are characteristic of Sézary syndrome, a malignant lymphoma with a propensity to infiltrate the skin (Lutzner et al, 1975; Edelson et al, 1974). Sézary syndrome is the leukemic variant of Mycosis fungoides and both entities are the most common primary cutaneous T-cell lymphomas. The disease progresses from Mycosis fungoides to Sézary syndrome, and a switch from a Th1 cytokine (IL2 and IFN-gamma) to a Th2 cytokine (IL4) production profile occurs (Rook et al, 1997; Vowels et al, 1994; Saed et al, 1994), although there are exceptions (Yagi et al, 1996). The etiology of this disease is not known (Whittacker, 2006).
