Receptorphin is a pentapeptide (Tyr-Ile-Phe-Asn-Leu; YIFNL) derived from the sequence of the second transmembrane loop of the opioid receptor. This sequence is conserved in opioid receptors from a variety of species (Kampa et al, 2001). Receptorphin competes for opioid binding and also competes with somatostatin for binding to its receptor. Receptorphin inhibits the cell proliferation of a number of human cancer cell lines, showing a preferential action on prostate cancer cells. The authors discuss the possibility that receptorphin might be liberated from the parent receptor protein and act as an opioid peptide after cell death. For peptides with related activities see also:
