[Retinoic acid inducible gene-I] The approved gene symbol for this protein, which contains a characteristic DEAD box motif, is DDX58 [DEAD box polypeptide 58; DEAD/H BOX 58]. RIG-I has been identified by Imaizumi et al (2002) as a gene the expression of which is induced in endothelial cells following exposure to lipopolysaccharides. Sequence motifs present in the 925 amino acid protein suggest that it is an RNA helicase. The protein also contains two copies of a CARD domain. Smooth muscle cells have been shown to express RIG-I in response to IFN-gamma (Imaizumi et al, 2004).
