accronym from rearranged during transfection proto-oncogene, identified by Takahashi et al (1985) as a transforming gene detected after transfection of NIH 3T3 cells with human lymphoma DNA. The human RET gene maps to chromosome 10q11.2 (Ishizaka et al, 1989).
