(approved gene symbol) [RNA binding motif protein 5] The gene encoding this protein of 815 amino acids has been cloned from a region of human chromosome 3p21.3 (Timmer et al, 1999). This region is considered critical for the development of lung cancer and is deleted in the small cell lung cancer cell line GLC20. The protein contains two RNA binding motifs, two different copies of a zinc finger motif, and a bipartite nuclear localization signal. The protein has been shown to bind specifically poly(G) RNA homopolymers in vitro Drabkin et al (1999). The mouse ortholog is 97 % identical at the protein level. Wide expression of the protein is detected in normal and lung cancer tissues and cell lines.
