(approved gene symbol) [quaking] abbr. QK, QK1, HQK [homolog of quaking]. Quaking has been identified originally as an autosomal recessive mutant mouse with marked tremor of the hindquarters. The mice eat, swim, breed, and nurse well even though the entire central nervous system is very deficient in myelin. Peripheral nerves are myelinated (Sidman et al, 1964). The gene is highly conserved over different species and is important for normal development in both vertebrates and invertebrates (Vernet and Artzt, 1997; Zorn et al, 1997; Tanaka et al, 1997; Saccomanno L et al, 1999; for overview see also: Justice and Hirschi, 2010).
