[Protein domains/sequence motifs MiniCOPE Dictionary]
Many different proteins contain identifiable homology regions (referred to as a domain, module, or motif). These sequences often are quite similar to those found in other proteins or are even highly conserved, whereas the rest of the sequences in the proteins concerned have no detectable similarity. Often, the domains detected by sequence analysis correspond to structural protein domains in the three-dimensional structure. Apparently, such domains often can exist in different sequence contexts and frequently confer a specific functionality to the proteins harbouring them. Proteins can be composed of several such domains and frequently a protein has functions based on the activity of the domains
