[Prothoracicotropic hormone] PTTH is a brain neurosecretory protein controlling insect development purified originally by Nagasawa et al (1984). The Bombyx mori gene has been cloned by Kataoka et al (1991). McBrayer et al (2007) have cloned the Drosophila melanogaster PTTH gene (CG13687) and shown that PTTH regulates developmental timing and body size in Drosophila. PTTH is one of the major factors controlling the production of ecdysteroid (molting) hormones by the insect prothoracic gland. Rewitz et al (2009) have shown that Drosophila PTTH binds to the receptor tyrosine kinase encoded by the torso gene.
