[programmed cell death-4] (approved gene symbol) The human gene maps to chromosome 10q24 (Soejima et al, 1999).
PDCD4 is known also as murine MA-3 (Shibahara et al, 1995). MA-3 (469 amino acids) is induced upon cell death by apoptosis in all cell lines tested so far, including thymocytes, T-cells, B-cells and pheochromocytoma. The specific role of the protein in apoptosis has not yet been determined. The PDCD4 protein has been shown to inhibit protein synthesis by directly interacting with eukaryotic initiation factor-4A (eIF4A) of the translation initiation complex (Yang et al, 2003).
