Oncomodulin is a small high-affinity calcium ion binding protein of 108 amino acids isolated originally from rat tumors (Morris hepatoma 5123) (Berchtold et al, 1989; Ahmed et al, 1990). The cDNA has been cloned by Gillen et al (1987). The protein is found in early embryonic cells, in the placenta in cytotrophoblasts (Brewer and MacManus, 1985, 1988), and in tumor tissues and tumor cell lines (Huber et al, 1990; MacManus et al, 1990).
