[Oenocyte]
Oenocytes are ectodermic cells present in the fat body of several insect species. The cells have been studied extensively as model systems for cell fate specification (Gould et al, 2001; Elstob et al, 2001; for overview see also: Makki et al, 2014).
Two separate populations of oenocytes have been described in Drosophila melanogaster. These are larval oenocytes and imaginal oenocytes (Koch, 1945). Larval oenocytes are derived from the embryonic ectoderm of abdominal segments (Hartenstein et al, 1992; Elstob et al, 2001). Oenocytes undergo extensive cell growth without division after larval hatching.
