[osteogenic protein-1] This factor is produced in the kidney and in the nervous system. It is produced also by human fetal trophoblasts in vivo and may be involved in the regulation of the synthesis of chorionic gonadotropin and progesterone by trophoblasts (Martinovic et al, 1996).
It induces new bone growth. The factor is a member of the TGF family of proteins. It is identical with BMP7 and forms heterodimers with BMP2A. See: BMP (bone morphogenetic proteins).
