This more general and collective term essential pertains mostly to neurons and ganglion cells and refers to a functional subdivision with respect to their electrical responses upon stimulation. ON-cells (or ON-center cells) show increased responses upon stimulation, whereas OFF-cells (or OFF-center cells) show decreased responses upon stimulation. The terms ON-neurons (ON-ganglion cells) and OFF-neurons (OFF-ganglion cells) are used also.
