[oligodendrocyte-myelin glycoprotein] approved gene symbol: OMG. This protein is a glycosylphosphatidylinositol-anchored CNS myelin protein found in oligodendrocytes and neurons (Habib et al, 1998; Vourc'h et al, 2003).
In cultured neurons OMgp causes growth cone collapse and inhibits neurite outgrowth and hence axonal regeneration. OMgp may be involved also in the formation and maintenance of myelin sheaths (Vourc'h and Andres, 2004).
The OMgp gene is located within an intron of the neurofibromatosis type I gene where it is transcribed from the opposite strand (Mikol et al, 1993). The functional significance of this finding remains to be established.
Wang et al (2002) have shown that OMgp acts through the Nogo receptor.
