OAF

[osteoclast activating factor] This activity is secreted by macrophages obtained from osteoporosis patients (Dewhirst et al, 1985). It enhances bone resorption. OAF is probably a mixture of IL1-beta (Dewhirst et al, 1985; Gowen et al, 1983), TNF-alpha, LIF, and some other locally produced factors with IL1-beta being the major component. Abe et al (1986) have suggested that the term be used as a generic term rather than for a distinct factor.
