[Classical swine fever virus Npro; Classical swine fever virus N-terminal protease] The Npro gene encoded by classical swine fever virus (CSFV) is dispensible for replication of its RNA (Moser et al, 1999; Tratschin et al, 1998). The protein encodes an autoprotease that is involved in the cotranslation and posttranslational processing of the single polyprotein translated from the viral RNA (Stark et al, 1993).
Porcine kidney cells infected with CSFV show a 100-fold increased capacity to resist to apoptosis induced by the synthetic double-stranded RNA poly-IC.
