[neurite outgrowth inhibitor] Nogo is a central nervous system myelin-associated neurite growth inhibitory protein (see also: Neurotrophic factors). Nogo has been identified initially by Spillmann et al (1998) in bovine spinal cord as NI-220 [neurite growth inhibitor 220]. A human brain-derived cDNA encoding Nogo has been identified as KIAA0886 by Nagase et al (1998).
Three splice variants of human Nogo have been identified (Prinjha et al, 2000; Chen et al, 2000). Nogo-A cDNA codes for the longest protein (1192 amino acids). Nogo-B has a shortened extracellular domain, lacking amino acids 186-1004.
