this Drosophila melanogaster protein, encoded by gene NimB5 (CG16873). It is a member of a larger family of membrane-bound or secreted proteins characterized by the presence of characteristic NIM repeats, which resemble EGF-like repeats (Somogyi et al, 2008).
Nimrod B5 is expressed almost exclusively in the fat body of larvae and can therefore be considered an adipokine (Graveley et al, 2011). Its expression peaks at the wandering stage when larvae migrate away from food and prepare for pupariation. The expression of Nimrod B5 has been shown to be induced in a mitochondrial mutant that mimics a starvation state Fernández-Ayala et al, 2010).
