A large family of highly variable synaptic transmembrane cell surface proteins encoded by three different genes that give rise more than 1000 isoforms due to differential splicing and usage of six different promoters (Ushkaryov et al, 1992; Ullrich et al, 1995).
Neurexins comprise longer forms (Alpha-Neurexins) which comprise NRXN1-alpha [Neurexin-1-alpha], NRXN2-alpha [Neurexin-2-alpha, and NRXN3-alpha [Neurexin-3-alpha] and shorter forms (Beta-Neurexins) NRXN1-beta [Neurexin-1-beta], NRXN2-beta [Neurexin-2-beta] and NRXN3-beta [
