In the narrower sense this term is a collective term proposed for a group of factors encoded by alternatively spliced transcripts derived from a common gene (the original neuregulin, neuregulin-1. In a more wider sense the term refers to the known related factors encoded by four distinct genes called NRG1 [neuregulin-1] (or simply NRG [neuregulin] (Wen et al, 1992), NRG2 [neuregulin-2] (Carraway et al, 1997; Chang et al, 1997, Busfield et al, 1997), and NRG3 [neuregulin-3] (Zhang et al, 1997), and NRG4 [neuregulin-4].
