NSILA actually is a collective term for activities that can be resolved into two different components (for a historical overview see also: Van den Brandee, 1999). Rinderknecht and Humbel (1978, 1978) have determined the primary structure of the two components of NSILA and termed them IGF-1 [Insulin-like growth factor-1] and IGF-2 [Insulin-like growth factor-2] because of their close similarity to the proform of insulin.
